Compromising India’s defense interests, PM Modi targets Congress at inauguration of Atal tunnel
Atal Tunnel at Rohtang Himachal Pradesh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launch a scathing attack on the Congress,
Saying that India’s defense interests compromise under his rule, adding that nothing is more important to his government than protecting the country.
Modi target the opposition party, which led the coalition government at the Center during 2004–14, after inaugurating the strategically important 9.02km Atal tunnel,

He cite several strategically important projects, including the runway from the Atal tunnel to Daulat Beg Oldi in Ladakh
And the production of Tejas fighter jets, to ensure that they were delayed or almost forgotten and question.

His government said, it has deploy all its strength to develop border infrastructure, never before has such a large scale work been done, be it roads, bridges or tunnels.
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the Approach Road for the Atal Tunnel in 2002,
But the project almost forgotten after his government left, Modi said, targeting the Congress led UPA dispensation.
Work on only 1300 meters complete by 2013-14, he said,
Adding that the project would be complete by 2040, before his government took over in 2014 and set it at an unprecedent rate.
‘BJP government increase the speed of construction from 300 m/year to 1400 m/year & complete the project in 2020,’ PM Modi said.
He said that in just 6 years, the government complete 26 years of work.
‘There was no political will. I can talk about dozens of projects that are important from a strategic standpoint,
But they neglect over the years,’ he said, targeting previous Congress led governments.
He said, clearly in the opposition party
‘Nothing is more important to us & the nation’s defense than national interest, but the nation has seen an era when defense interests were compromise.’
His government has made major reforms so that defense equipment can be made under Make in India.
Highlighting the strategic importance of the tunnel,
Defense Minister Rajnath Singh said that this will facilitate the deployment of soldiers and movement of weapons and rationing.
It will also be a great help to the people and the tourism sector.
